In places where it is too warm for surface ice but cold enough for ice to exist beneath the surface, the MLA sees unusually dark material. That finding suggested the spots were just a thin layer of dark material lying on top of the ice and kept chilled by it. Europa and Enceladus (moons of Jupiter and Saturn, respectively) are also thought to harbor oceans of liquid water. Antarctica isn't the only place in the solar system where water sits concealed in the dark beneath thick ice. These measurements also reveal ice is exposed at the surface in the coldest of those deposits, but buried beneath unusually dark material across most of the deposits. Then there is only one answer and it is Greig Beck's Beneath the Dark Ice. The grooves converge at points directly beneath a spot. Here on earth, buried beneath more than a kilometer of ice in the Antarctic, is a vast array of digital optical sensors known as IceCube. THEMIS is the Thermal Emission into the surface under the ice. A viable community of bacteria has been found eking out a living in a dark, salty, and subfreezing environment beneath nearly 20 meters of ice in one of Antarctica's most isolated lakes.
