Michael Flynn's Eifelheim, which is mostly set in the 1340s, does not suffer from either pitfall of medievalizing. I've just finished Eifelheim by Michael Flynn, and I really enjoyed it. I am not having great luck with my Worldcon homework, really. Aliens crash in fourteenth century Germany. Eifelheim is a carefully researched depiction of Rhineland in the 14th century, showing both the bright and dark aspects of medieval civilization and the small renaissance that was underway before the Black Plague. Luke Burrage reads a science fiction novel and reviews it when he's done. Eifelheim opens in August, 1348 in the German village of Oberhochwald. I found this novel to be moving and effective and I recomend it highly. I really wanted to have meaningful connections between timelines, in a believable manner. As Dietrich, the parish priest, begins his daily rituals, the area is struck by a freak storm, and an electrical charge sparks a great fire.
