I can honestly say that The Death of Ivan Ilych was my favorite reading of the entire semester. The Death of Ivan Ilych was one of the first "grown up" short stories I ever read. I was rather surprised to find that he actually died in the second paragraph, because it is the nature and significance of death that Tolstoy wants to discuss. The only reason I ran across this story was it was required reading for one of my college classes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I feel that I learned the most of what was said in such a non-complicated, relatable fashion. One gem of a story that he wrote that is not as well-known is a story entitled, ???The Death of Ivan Ilych???. From "Family Happiness" - "In the morning we were cheerful, at dinner polite, in the evening tender. After reading a really great novel entitled ???The Death of Ivan Ilyich??? wrote by Leo Tolstoy, believe it or not, I got nightmare when I went to bed. It occurred to him that what had seemed perfectly impossible before, namely that he had not spent his life as he should have done, might after all be true. This novella follows the death of Ivan Ilych, which you might gather from the title. Ivan Ilych is a public servant, married with children, mostly concerned about getting enough money to have a comfortable life. I thought it might be nice to start with something short instead of wading into War and Peace or Anna Karenina, so I picked up a copy of Barnes and Noble's The Death of Ivan Ilych and Other Short Stories.
